This thread has reminded me of the greatest game I ever attended. It was 2001, I'd recently got married and moved to the Los Angeles area. The wife and I went down to San Diego to catch a Cards/Pads game. In Qualcom in those days, on monday games, SD would have $5 tickets for any tickets in the park, and either $1 or $2 hot dogs and beer. We went down early that day and got seats on the 3rd base side of homeplate about 15 rows from the field. Spectacular seats for $5 each! 6th inning or so comes around and I start to notice that Bud Smith has not given up a hit yet. An inning later, the Padre fans around me start to notice and talking to me about it and start almost rooting me along as if I'm a part of the Cards team. Well, everybody knows the outcome from there. Bud got the no-hitter and all the Padre fans around me were shaking my hand and congratulating ME! I don't know that you'll ever get that kind of experience watching any other sport... and this is a perfect example of how sometimes history and the game itself is much larger than any individual team. Fans coming together to celebrate history no matter their allegiances... that's baseball.
