Burns Park Loop

I walked and jogged the Burns Park Loop this morning and early afternoon in 1:21:30. It's in the mid-50s today, and shiny blue.

Ridge Road Loop

Man, it's just non-stop cold here. We got a dusting of snow this morning, and I think our high was 34°F. It was 33 when I walked the Ridge Road Loop late this afternoon in 1:01:07.

The NFL Green Bay Packers defeated the Chicago Bears, 33-28, at Soldier Field yesterday. The Packers had to win to make the playoffs, and did on a 4th-and-8, 48-yard touchdown pass from Erin Rodgers to Randall Cobb in the final minute. I watched the first half at Hooters, which sucked. It was the only place I could think of that shows any game you want. At halftime I decided my couch and a radio sounded preferable. Green Bay will host the San Francisco 49ers at around 3 p.m. CST next Sunday. The game will be broadcast nationally on Fox.

Park Hill Loop

This morning was lovely for a tour of the Park Hill Loop—upper 40s, mostly sunny, and calm. I jogged for a total of maybe five minutes, but mostly walked it in 1:14:03.

Only Boykin had the presents of mind to pick up the boy

Burns Park Loop

I walked the Burns Park Loop this morning in 1:31:04. Before I started, I was pleased to have read on a Facebook post by Karen Eckman that her sister inlaw Heidi Eckman is now engaged. Didn't I win a bet?

Ruth has been in and out the last three days. Merle Malone, my backyard neighbor, told me she also spends time with a family across the street from his house. Right now she's curled up on my couch.

35th Street Loop/Oaklawn Park simulcast

I walked and jogged the 35th Street Loop this morning in 54:40 or so. I've cleared my watch since then. Tim Cooper and I spent much of the afternoon at Oaklawn Park, where I lost a total of $2.50 betting on races from Tampa Bay Downs, Gulfstream Park in Miami, and Fairgrounds in New Orleans. Man, we had fun, surrounded by good old men having the same.

Burns Park Loop

I walked and jogged the Burns Park Loop this afternoon in 1:20:37. Ruth walked up the hill on Orange Street yesterday morning and I haven't since seen her. She is so perfect, by cat standards, that I think she'll be fine wherever she winds up.

Levy Trail

I walked three miles on the Levy Trail this morning in 44:04.

Levy Loop

I walked into Christmas morning on the Levy Loop. I was out for 30:43.

Orange Street Loop

I walked the Orange Street Loop this morning in 44:04.

Walt Webb's Fat Chicks beat the Green Bay Packers, 120.81-101.29, in the Cooper Bowl on Sunday. My disappointment was offset by the great Hash Christmas bash, and a stray cat named Ruth. She's hung around for a week or so, until yesterday morning when I finally adopted her. She was the absolute superstar at the Christmas run. I have never seen a pet more comfortable in a crowd.

Toby Von Rimbow won the Sweet Baby Jesus Christ Memorial Two-mile Race to Hell and Back in 13:49. Petra Williams won the women's division in 17:31.

Sweet Baby Jesus Christ Memorial Two-mile Race to Hell and Back/DFL

It took me 39:40 to mark the Sweet Baby Jesus Christ Memorial Two-mile Race to Hell and Back this morning. The race is scheduled to start at 4 p.m., CST.

Walt Webb's Fat Chicks are favored to defeat the Green Bay Packers, 126.08-122.83, in today's Democrat Football League Cooper Bowl. It is the first time since 2010 that the Packers have not played as favorites. The final score should be decided no later than about 6:45 this evening. All of our players are scheduled to start at either noon or c. 3 p.m.

35th Street Loop

It was nearly 11 p.m. when I started the four-mile 35th Street Loop. I jogged it in 44:19, with splits of 11:00, 11:17, 11:04, and 10:58, and felt great. As a consequence, there's a chance I won't sleep more than two or three hours between now and the 12th annual Christmas Hash Run, and the Green Bay Packers' Cooper Bowl match with the Fat Chicks.

Burns Park Loop

I walked and jogged two laps of the Burns Park Loop this morning in 2:41:14, and felt fine all the way. The weather was perfect—cool, calm, and overcast. Kasey and I didn't golf yesterday. She said she was too hungover.

Burns Park Loop/Humpin' Hash

Ron and Elaine, Bill Brass, Y.T., and I walked the Burns Park Loop this morning in 1:43:44. My legs felt fine early, but dead after about an hour. I'm blaming the catfish. This evening I walked 2.5 miles with the Humpin' Hash on a pub crawl through the River Market. Lacey described it on Facebook as "the best 2.5 miles of my life." It was good. As result, I'm scheduled to golf in the morning with a lovely and entirely petepretty woman named Kasey. I mentioned her a couple of weeks ago. She was very drunk. We'll see.

Ghetto Cat Loop/Maple Street Loop/DFL

I walked the Ghetto Cat Loop this morning in 30:58. This should be a nearly perfect day to drive to Nashville and Hot Springs, and it was. I again overdid it on catfish, but this time with Dad in Hot Springs. This evening I walked the Maple Street Loop in 30:35.

The NFL started play in 1920. Since then, there have been 34 games in which a man has kicked six or more field goals (the record is eight). The DFL Packers kicker Justin Tucker became the 34th last night, when he kicked six to gave the Packers a 140.12-128.71 victory over the Cavemen, and help advance his team to its third consecutive Cooper Bowl (we'll play Walt Webb's Fat Chicks, 117.01-99.06 semifinal victors over Krup's Kids). Tucker kicked a 61-yarder in the final minute to give the Baltimore Ravens victory over the Detroit Lions, and put the NFL Packers in a position from which they control their fate; if they win their final two games, they're in the playoffs.

Levy Trail/Maple Street Loop/DFL

The Geezers walked 4.1 miles on the Levy Trail this morning. I tossed in a total of 1.6 miles by walking to and from our start-finish site, to cover a total of 5.7 miles in 1:37:17.  My legs are a little dead. Late this afternoon I walked the Maple Street Loop in 31:35.

The DFL Packers have to get seven points from Baltimore Ravens placekicker Justin Tucker tonight. In our system, kickers get 2 points for field goals of less than 30 yards, 3 for those of 30-49, and 4 for any over 50. They get 1 point for each extra point (the kick after touchdowns). Tucker has scored 7 or more points in 9 of Baltimore's 13 games this season. Based on that alone, I have a 69.2% chance of winning.

This is the NFL Packers' 94th season. Until yesterday, they had never returned from a deficit of 23 or more points to win. But yesterday afternoon, they trailed the Dallas Cowboys 26-3 at halftime, and won 37-36.

Levy Loop/Orange Street Loop/DFL

I jogged the Levy Loop this morning in 22:47, with splits of 11:27 and 11:20. It was impromptu that the effort turned nonstop. I planned to do my typical walk-jog, but felt so good by the time I got to the bend in Orange Street between my house and The T-Shirt Shop that I knew a chance for a good ol' fashioned jog-to-the-finish was in hand.

This evening I did intervals through the second mile of the Orange Street Loop, by alternating one-minute runs with one-minute walks. My runs were probably at about an eight-minute/mile pace. Maybe a little bit faster on the last couple. I walked and jogged the first and third miles. My splits were 11:45, 11:04, and 13:00. This was a good day. I'm beginning to feel sort of like I did in the fall of 2008 as I prepared for the 2009 Little Rock Marathon.

The DFL Green Bay Packers are in for extreme tension tomorrow night. We trail the Cavemen, 128.71-122.6. The Cavemen are through. We have a kicker going for the Balitmore Ravens In the Monday Night Football game, which has Baltimore at the Detroit Lions. Our kicker, Justin Tucker, is projected to score 6.98 points. Consequently, we are favored to win, 129.60-128.71. I'd call it a coin flip. The NFL Packers returned from a 26-3 halftime deficit to defeat the Dallas Cowfucks, 37-36. It was the biggest comeback in the Packers' 94-year history.

Burns Park/Maple Street Loop

I walked with Charley and Lou Peyton, and a woman named Leela, and man named Gary, all over Burns Park this morning. Lou and I walked alone together for about the last half. We were out for 2:23:46, and covered close to nine miles. We were getting it, so it might have been a bit more. I felt fantastic. Early this evening I walked the Maple Street Loop in 31:46.

Levy Trail/DFL

It occurred to me this morning that I hadn't so much as thought about my left hip in weeks. I felt good as I walked and jogged two miles on the Levy Trail in 26:18.

The Democrat Football League Green Bay Packers got off to a mediocre start in the Cooper Bowl semifinals on Thursday night. Two of our receivers in the Thursday Night Football game were projected to score a total of 27.07 points, but scored 21.38. All of the Cavmen's players will go Sunday. Yahoo®'s updated projected final score has the Cavemen winning, 115.99-109.50.

Burns Park Loop/Humpin' Hash

Three other Geezers and I cut the Burns Park Loop short this morning. According to Ron Gimblet's watch, we walked 3.07 miles. I finished in 1:01:12 (there were still several icy sections). This evening I jogged and walked for 1:38:46 with the Humpin' Hash. We probably covered about 5 miles; each were very hard. My legs are beat up from a shit load of falls, all in about a three-hundred yard, straight-downhill stretch between Knopp Park and Cantrell Blvd. It sucked.

I walked the Maple Street Loop tonight in 32:21. It's still cold, but the streets are nice. I'm hungry, and about to make cast-iron baked chicken thighs, with okra and carrots.

38th Street Loop/Levy Trail

I walked the 38th Street Loop this morning in 31:16. The streets are almost entirely clear of ice, except for a short stretch at the northern end of Orange. The sidewalk on 47th, where I fell yesterday, is still slick. This time I walked on the grass. That wasn't necessary on the Levy Trail. There were maybe twenty feet where I had to slow way down and sort of skate along late this afternoon as I walked two miles in 29:41. I underdressed. There was light, unscheduled snow falling, and a significant wind blowing from the north straight down the trail. That helped motivate me to walk just about as fast as I could.

Levy Loop/Hash

If any of the many loyal Pam's Boy readers see this before 3 p.m. CST, please turn the nearest available television to Fox. You'll see the Detroit Lions playing the Philadelphia Eagles in Philadelphia. I have watched football since 1967, have probably seen about three thousand games, but have never seen snow like this.*

I walked the Levy Loop this morning in 33:42. The roads are a little clearer, though I fell once (in full view of several cars on 47th Street).

I got to the Hash late, and then had to wait out the radio broadcast of the NFL Green Bay Packers' 22-21 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. It was big. It means the Packers are still in the race, and might be furthered inspired to get Aaron Rodgers back on the field. That could make a huge difference in the DFL Playoffs. We'll play in the semifinals next week. After the game, I jogged and walked for 33:43 through the Riverdale area, out by Rebsamen Park Golf Course. Cassandra Spicer set the run. Her Hash name is Merkin Mindy.

Levy Loop

It's 23°F at 11:11 a.m. There was enough traffic yesterday to turn the streets slushy. They are now consequently covered with ice, and as slippery as streets get. It took me 38:25 to walk the Levy Loop. It's a bright blue morning, with that inexplicable pastel hue of cold days. The few people I saw driving, or scraping their driveways, or sledding, all smiled and waved. I exchanged a few sentences with three of them, including my postman, and stopped to talk with a a man named Paul for about fifteen minutes. It had been more than two years since I'd seen him, and he told me he'd since learned we have at least two mutual friends—Tiny Tim Biggs of the Hash, and a fellow I worked with at the paper. Paul has a cat named Max, who I have occasionally stopped to pet for the last ten years, and a new one named Taj, who is also friendly, and one of the prettiest cats I've seen. They walked around us throughout our conversation.

35th Street Loop/Levy Loop

I walked the 35th Street Loop this morning in 58:10. It was relatively nice then, just wet and cold. Now there's ice and snow all over the place. Even Sam doesn't want out.

Heck, man, Levy is pure white. We got more snow than ice. I don't think anyone in town lost power. It was much more comfortable walking this afternoon than this morning. I walked the Levy Loop in 33:34, slowed by a few slippery spots, and cars driving too fast.

Orange Street Loop

I walked the Orange Street Loop late this afternoon in 45:05. It rained on me the last five minutes or so. It's turning miserable here. They're saying a shit load of ice is very likely tomorrow.

Burns Park Loop

I walked and jogged the Burns Park Loop this afternoon in 1:20:10. At 2:50 p.m., it's 73°F. I think the high for Friday and Saturday might be below freezing. There's a chance for an ice storm.

Levy Trail/DFL

Man, I ate two huge meals today, the first in Nashville, the next in Hot Springs. Lots of catfish and ham went down. I walked two miles on the Levy Trail tonight in 33:03.

All of the improbable long shots cashed for the Democrat Football League Green Bay Packers last night. It was incredible. Krupsaw's team held on to win 123.63-123.21. Goddamn Russellmania III won against all odds. The only way we'll have to play the seemingly unbeatable Complete Sellouts is if we make the Cooper Bowl.

Monday, December 2, 2013

Ridge Road Loop/DFL

I walked and jogged the Ridge Road Loop this morning 53:05.

The Green Bay Packers defeated the Capitol City Redskin, 98.82-64.12. We will get a bye through the first round of the playoffs, and then very likely get  the cow shit beat out of us by the Complete Sellouts in the semifinals. There is still a chance we we won't have to play the Sellouts until the Cooper Bowl, but that will require a couple of long shots to come through on Monday Night Football. Also, there's the extreme long shot that the Sellouts lose next week.

Levy Faster Than Two Motherfuckers 3K course/Hash/DFL

I walked a slightly longer version of the Levy Faster Than Two Motherfuckers 3K course this morning in 30:42. This evening I walked for 48:28 with Z Man at the Hash run way out in west Little Rock, not far from Pinnacle Mountain. There was a new nurse there. She seemed ideal at first sight, and remained so. She said she's scheduled to move away on Dec. 20, though seemed inclined to wait until the morning of Dec. 23, the day after my Christmas run. We'll see.

The Democrat Football League Green Bay Packers won, and are DFL regular-season champions for the first time. I'm delighted. Still, the Cooper Bowl is all that really counts.

Levy Trail

I walked right at 2.2 miles on the Levy Trail this morning in 33:10, trying to make some room for Jill Krupsaw's holiday cooking. She's good at it. The NFL Packers start their game in Detroit in about fifteen minutes. The DFL Packers have one player going in the late afternoon and evening games.

I take it back. Jill is a great at holiday dinners. I guess I forgot. Her dressing, mashed potatoes, potato casserole, bread, and pumpkin pie were at least as good as any I have ever eaten. The bread and pumpkin pie were ridiculously delicious. They nearly made me cry.

Burns Park Loop/DFL

I walked and jogged the Burns Park Loop this afternoon in 1:20:17.

The DFL Green Bay Packers held on for a 108.86-101.62 victory over the Ratpackers. With one regular-season game left, we remain in first place at 10-2. The Krupacabras and the Fat Chicks are tied for second at 9-3. We're in good shape to finish no worse than second.

38th Street Loop/DFL

Weather.com is reporting light, freezing rain. It didn't feel to me as if it were freezing as I walked the 38th Street Loop this morning in 32:17.

The DFL Green Bay Packers played pretty well yesterday, enough so when I awoke this morning I planned to report here that we are about 9-1 favorites to win. A few minutes later I noticed that Yahoo® gives us an 89% chance of winning. We lead the Ratpackers 103.66-101.62, and have Washington running back Alfred Morris going in Monday Night Football. The Ratpackers will play Washington defensive back DeAngelo Hall. The NFL Packers tied the Minnesota Vikings, 26-26.

Levy Loop/DFL

I walked the Levy Loop this morning in 30:15, and was pleased by my lack of soreness. It was such an easy walk. My confidence is up a bit today.

Man, the DFL Green Bay Packers got creamed. Walt's Fat Chicks beat us, 100.89-56.31. That's our lowest points output since the 2004 season. I didn't get a touchdown from any of my starters. Only the Denver Broncos' Demaryius Thomas broke double digits (w/ 13.75). We're still in first place, but, jesus, we're gonna have to quit sucking. The NFL Packers also lost, 27-13 to the New York Giants. Both of my teams need Aaron Rodgers back as soon as possible.

Maple Street Loop

I walked the Maple Street Loop this morning in 31:51. The balls of my feet are a little sore, but otherwise I felt fine. My performance yesterday threw cold water on my current athletic objective. I went so slowly that I now doubt I will be able to go fifty miles in thirteen hours or less five months from now. Nevertheless, I am at least for the moment committed to pursue that end. We'll see.

Bona Dea Trail

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark.—I quit after five laps, or 17 miles, at the Bona Dea 50K today, but, after sitting around and eating for fifteen minutes, I decided to go ahead and walk one more lap. Heck, I was going to have to wait for four hours or so for Ron Gimblet to finish. So, I completed 20.4 miles in 5:50:55. My splits for the 3.4 miles laps, and the pit stops, were 50:03 (1:16), 48:36 (3:03), 49:22 (3:54), 48:13 (6:27), 49:00, (14:49), 1:05:59. I went through 10 miles in 2:29:19, and 20 in 5:42:28. This run gave me 72 miles for the last seven days, which I believe helps explain why my legs felt awful. The trail was lovely, as were the runners, but the running and walking sucked from the start.

Friday, November 15, 2013

Maple Street Loop/Levy Trail/DFL

I alternated one-minute jogs with four-minute walks to finish the Maple Street Loop in 29:50. My legs did not feel very lively, which has made me question my decision to go with Susy and the Gimblets to enter the Bona Dea 50K tomorrow morning in Russellville. As it stands now, at 7:22 a.m., I think I'll go with the thought of quitting after five or six laps of the 3.4-mile Bona Dea Trail, so after either 17 or 20.4 miles. We'll see.

Late this afternoon, heck, at dusk, I walked two miles on the Levy Trail in 31:18. My legs felt good, a bit springy.

Walt's DFL team, the Fat Chicks, got a big jump on the Green Bay Packers during Thursday Night Football. He had three players—including his Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck—combine to score 51.64 points. I had one player—Indianapolis' defense—score 4.00 points. Yahoo® currently predicts the Fat Whores will win, 117.16-100.20.

Levy/Levy Trail

Every time I step in from randomly wandering through Levy, I think I should do it more often, rather than insisting upon my typical ironclad adherence to precisely measured routes. This morning I walked for 52:03, with a good deal of the time spent in less-affluent southwestern Levy. I walked several streets which I had not only never walked or jogged, but had never driven on, including Parkway, and Division (which forms the eastern border of the grave yard where they will likely bury me, assuming I'm ever buried). There are a couple of beautiful, old, rock houses with huge yards on Parkway. I had no idea. I guess I covered a little less than four and a half miles.

Late this afternoon I walked two miles on the Levy Trail in 31:17.

Wednesday, November 13, 2013

Levy Trail/F Street Loop

The Geezers walked from the southern to the northern end of the Levy Trail and back this morning, or about seven miles, in 1:49:46. I jogged for 8:30 with Bill Brass and Elaine late in the run, intending to go a mile and a half, but had to stop at the McDonald's near my house so as not to shit myself.

OK, I'm going to have to do these F Street Loops a bit easier, or I'll quit doing them. Tonight I jogged and walked a half mile up in 6:17, then did four laps of the one-mile F Street Loop in 48:02, with splits of 12:23, 12:03, 11:54, and 11:41, and walked and jogged a half mile down in 7:36.

Burns Park-Covered Bridge Loops/Maple Street Loop/DFL

The Geezers decided to combine the Burns Park and Covered Bridge Loops this morning, which gave us 8.2 miles. We walked them in 2:23:58. It's borderline cold—maybe 45°F, and windy. Early this evening I walked the Maple Street Loop in 29:26. My legs felt great, much better than this morning. I look forward to running the F Street Loop tomorrow night. At 7:00 p.m., it's 39°, and the first time I have been awake for sub-40 since last spring.

The new DFL standings were published this morning, and the Packers are guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. I hope we can stay in at least second place. That will give us a bye through the first round, and increase the chance that Aaron Rodgers will return to help. It would give him four weeks from next Sunday, or six weeks overall, which they say is about how long it takes a broken collar bone to heal.

38th Street Loop/Maple Street Loop/DFL

I walked the 38th Street Loop this morning in 30:27, and was pleased to see how quickly the damage from yesterday's march dissipated. After a half mile, I felt fine; by early evening, however, a bit of soreness had settled in. I overcame it to walk the Maple Street Loop in 29:04.

The DFL and NFL Green Bay Packers lost their quarterback in the first quarter for the goddamn second consecutive week. This time it was an over-the-hill chump named Seneca Wallace, but it still was enough to doom the NFL Packers' chance; they lost, 27-13, to the Philadelphia Eagles. The DFL Packers, however, overcame the loss to defeat our arch rival Krupacabras (Jeff Krupsaw's team) 92.95-80.20. We're 9-1, and remain in first place with three regular-season games left.

Ouachita Trail

I walked Susy Philip's 15-mile hike on the Ouachita Trail in 6:00:41. That, I think, sounds slower than we indeed moved when we were moving. We stopped a lot for all sorts of good reasons. There were about twenty people on the hike, which I enjoyed tremendously.

Maple Street Loop

At 8:28 a.m., it's calm, overcast, and 52°F, or perfect for running. Too bad I'm so unfit. This morning I jogged the Maple Street Loop in 21:57, with splits of 11:11, and 10:46. I hope the weather's this nice tomorrow morning, for Susy Phillip's 15-mile birthday hike on the Ouachita Trail (provided I make it, of course).

F Street Loop/Levy Trail

I measured the distance from my house to the start/finish line* of the F Street Loop this morning, and it is 0.6 miles. Consequently, I completed 3.2 miles, also this morning, in 46:54, and two laps of the loop in 28:41, with splits of 14:35, and 14:06. I jogged only when headed downhill on the steepest section of F Street.

Late this afternoon I alternated four minute walks with one minute jogs to complete three miles on the Levy Trail in 40:46.

QUESTION OF THE DAY
How would NASA, and Mothers against Drunk Driving, react if the Mars Curiosity Rover came upon a wrecked flying saucer, discovered inside a half dozen dead aliens, four empty thirty-packs of Milwaukee's Best, and a half-empty can in the pilot's cup holder? Do you suppose people would start believing the mini-mart clerk from down there in Tupelo?

*it's a loop, so I know there are infinite start/finish lines. The one I use is at the intersection of 34th and Sycamore, near the heart of eastern Levy's poorest section

Two Rivers Park/Levy Trail

I walked for 2:01:04 this morning through Two Rivers Park, the first thirty or so minutes alone, mostly back and forth across the bridge, with a bit of out-and-back on the River Trail (I thought the Geezers were scheduled to meet at 8:30 a.m., rather than 9). Bill Brass and Sandy Venable showed up on time and I walked the rest with them. We jogged a mile in 10:58 toward the end. I guess we went a little over eight miles. Late this afternoon, I walked two miles on the Levy Trail 31:43.

Wednesday, November 6, 2013

F Street Loop

The F Street Loop goes from Levy to Park Hill up 33rd Street, and returns on F Street. It is precisely one mile, according to Google Earth. The start/finish is a half mile from my house. Tonight I did it three times in 38:25, with loops of 13:29, 12:50, and 12:05, and felt fantastic. I believe the loop would serve as good prep for the Ouachita Trail 50.

Levy Trail/38th Street LoopDFL

I walked three miles on the Levy Trail this morning in 47:03. Late this afternoon I walked the 38th Street Loop in 31:57. I hadn't walked the loop since March. I don't know why not. It's a fine loop.

Aaron Rodgers, the DFL and NFL Green Bay Packers quarterback, broke his left collar bone at the end of the first drive last night. Instead of scoring his normal 30 points, he scored 2.45. Consequently, The Carpetbaggers beat the DFL Packers, 109.6-94.98, and the Chicago Bears beat the NFL Packers, 27-20. I'm not sure what a "small fracture" means, but someone reported that's what Rodgers has, and that he could be back for the Thanksgiving game in Detroit. I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't play again this season.

QUESTION OF THE DAY
Why do Transportation Security Administration employees get killed "in the line of duty," and 7-11 clerks "at work?"

Monday, November 4, 2013

Orange Street Loop/Maple Street Loop/DFL

I walked the Orange Street Loop this morning in 44:12, and felt nice. It went easily, as did my jog and walk of the Maple Street Loop this evening. I got it in 25:13, with splits of 12:29 and 12:44.

When the weekend began, the No. 1 DFL Green Bay Packers were favored to beat The Carpetbaggers, ranked 15th (out of 16), by a little over 30 points. Now, headed into the NFL Packers' Monday Night Football game with the Chicago Bears, we are favored to win by slightly less than 12. We trail 104.68-92.53. Aaron Rodgers plays for us tonight. The Carpetbaggers will go with a Bears tight end named Martellus Bennett. Yahoo predicts Rodgers will score 31.36, and Bennett 7.46. The Packers should win. Still, this is the first Monday Night I have approached this season with legitimate concern (bearing in mind that I'm talking about fantasy football, for christ's sake).

QUESTIONS OF THE DAY
How would NASA react if the Mars Curiosity Rover were to find a among the rocks a perfectly preserved, Revlon blowdryer?

Park Hill Loop-Gimblett Loop

I walked and jogged the Park Hill Loop and the Gimblett Loop this morning in 2:19:35. My fastest mile was 13:38, and my slowest 15:10. I felt good. It's beautiful outside. This would be a perfect day to drive through Paron on the way to Hot Springs.

35th Street Loop

I walked the Ridge Road Street Loop early this evening in 1:00:25. Here's what a moron I am; I saw trick-or-treaters along that route, whereupon I remembered it was Halloween. Fuck. After I got home, I rode my Schwinn over to Kroger, and bought the hell out of candy. I added it to the Snickers left over from last year, and am now passing it out as I watch the Cincinnati Bengals play the Miami Dolphins.

I walked and jogged three miles on the Levy Trail tonight in 39:03.

Levy Trail

I walked the Levy Trail this afternoon in 33:22, the last half mile very slowly with a c. 70-year-old man named Charlie Graves. He was nice. He said he'd lived in Levy since 1972, but I didn't recognize him, nor he me; that seemed odd, considering how much I have run and walked in Levy over the last 26 years, and that he's missing his left hand.

Monday, October 28, 2013

Park Hill Loop/DFL

I walked the Park Hill Loop this morning in 1:17:41. Football weather still resides in Levy.

The DFL Packers held on to win 110.66-94.47 over Russellmania III, and to advance to 8-0. The best previous start for the Packers was 5-0. We are now on a 12-game regular-season winning streak, and a 14-game streak including last season's playoffs. Our team record is 15. I'm not sure of this, but I think the DFL record is 18. I know we're second on the all-time list. We are nevertheless vulnerable, no more than two injuries away from being completely cornholed.

QUESTION OF THE DAY
How the fuck long does it take to listen to sixty million phone conversations?

PLEASE TELL ME WHAT THIS MEANS
A Little Rock runner named Jack Evans wrote this on Facebook, concerning a lovely photograph of Pikes Peak published by Petra Williams:
The magnetism of Zebulon. Accept the challenge and you will get a view most people are not willing to give of theirselves which you have to take step by step up Barr Trail. To Be or Not To Be Is Unacceptable.*

*I was nearly certain that Jack has not written scripts for the television show The Office, but am no longer. Doesn't that sound exactly like something the original boss would've said, or written?

Maple Street Loop/DFL

I walked the Maple Street Loop this morning in 30:37. It feels exactly like football today—gray, cold, and damp. The leaves are starting to turn.

The Democrat Football League Green Bay Packers lead Russellmania III, 110.66-74.47. Russellmania has the Seattle Seahawks' defense going on Monday Night Football, plus two defensive players, and a crappy receiver whose name I cannot recall. Yahoo® predicts the Packers will win, 110.66-98.16. We'll see. The NFL Packers beat the Minnesota Vikings tonight, 44-31.

Saturday, October 26, 2013

Ridge Road Loop

I walked the four-mile Ridge Road Loop at lunchtime in 1:01:36. It's nearly perfect out, 55°F, partly cloudy, with a light breeze. Samantha converted to winter mode yesterday. She's in the house roughly a third of the time. Her new indoor post is the arm rest of my couch, immediately to my right. She sits there, bathes herself, and complains. She's Sam.

Friday, October 25, 2013

Ghetto Cat Loop

I walked the Ghetto Cat Loop this afternoon in 30:53. At 6:06 p.m., it's 52°F.

Burns Park Loop

The Geezers provide, I think, an example of mob mentality. When there are five or six of us out there, we don't worry about Ann Moore. We just walk off and leave her, and then a couple of us will wait at our cars until she finishes. Today, Bill Brass, Ann, and I were the only ones out there, and Bill and I routinely stopped to let Ann catch up. It took us 1:59:50 to walk 5.8 miles, including the 5.4-mile Burns Park Loop, plus an extra 0.4 miles because our regular parking lot was closed.

35th Street Loop

It's a good thing the Ouachita Trail 50 wasn't today, because it was hard work for me walking the ol' five-mile 35th Street Loop this morning. I finished in 1:17:17. My legs were deader than all those school teachers.

Tuesday, October 22, 2013

Levy Trail/DFL

I walked and jogged three miles on the Levy Trail this morning in 38:43. I haven't reported on my left hip in a while. Roughly two months after I hurt it, what I feel in it is no more than a minor hint, or reminder that I indeed have a hip joint. As I've written before, it's a feeling I would not give a second thought to if I wasn't looking for it. That's truer now than the last time I wrote it.

The DFL Packers defeated K-Squad, 103.36-74.26. It was our second lowest point total from eight games. My team is a little banged up, Houston Texans running back Arian Foster in particular. He's hurt one of his hamstrings. The coming weekend is a bye for Houston, so at least he'll have an extra week to heal. We're playing second-place Russellmania III next in what should be our sternest challenge thus far. Our thirteen-game winning streak is in significant jeopardy.

Monday, October 21, 2013

Levy Trail/DFL

I walked two miles on the Levy Trail this morning in 31:06, wearing blue jeans and a new jacket. I'm leaving in a moment, in the same outfit, to pick up Jim and Karen at Dad's in Hot Springs. Today is Mother's 81st birthday, so we're going to Nashville to visit.

The DFL Green Bay Packers have won this weekend to go to 7-0. Monday Night Football will give us the opportunity to pile on a few more points. We currently hold a 99.36-74.26 lead over K-Squad, the team we defeated last winter in Cooper Bowl XVI. Tonight we hope for the Minnesota Vikings to hold the New York Giants to as close to dick as possible so that we can further extend our lead over all these other piece-of-shit teams. The NFL Packers beat the Cleveland Browns by a lot, I can't remember how much, to go to 4-2.

35th Street Loop

I forgot. Starting at about 5:15 this morning, I walked and jogged the four-mile 35th Street Loop in about 55:20-something, I think. Twenty minutes later I drove to downtown to watch Leah Thorvilson win the Race for the Cure, which is significant since they let men race this year. I timed her and forgot to save my 35th Street time. It was cool today, cold in the morning.

By the way, have you heard of Tom Cotton? He's a U.S. Congressman from Arkansas' 4th District, kind of a Tea Party guy making a race for the U.S. Senate against Democratic incumbent Mark Pryor. It is already a very high profile race here. You can't watch a football game without seeing three or four ads from each. Point is, Cotton finished second in the men's division this morning, ran about 20:05. Crazy. What's with these Republicans and fast 5Ks?

Levy Trail/DFL

I walked for 1:12:39 on the Levy Trail this morning with Ron Gimblet, through an ever so slight drizzle. It was nice. I'd say we went about four and a half miles.

The DFL Green Bay Packers defeated the Sherwood Shigellas, 121.23-93.63.

Monday, October 14, 2013

Levy Trail/DFL

I walked two miles on the Levy Trail this afternoon in 30:32.

The DFL Green Bay Packers lead the Sherwood Shigellas, 121.23-89.87. The Packers have Indianapolis Colts linebacker Robert Mathis going in Monday Night Football. Sherwood has San Diego Chargers receiver Vincent Brown. Yahoo® projects a 124.04-99.35 victory for the Packers. His guy would have to have one of the best games in NFL history for my team to lose. The NFL Packers beat the Baltimore Ravens, 19-17.

I walked the Ghetto Cat Loop this afternoon in 30:03. The DFL Green Bay Packers easily held on for a 133.46-120.64 victory over the Cavemen. There's no stopping us.

THE DAY'S EVIDENCE THAT FERVENT PROPONENTS OF POLITICAL IDEOLOGIES ARE EITHER BRAINWASHED OR STUPID
Many trying to resist the current polarization or find some sort of middle ground are punished by both sides. One of the clearest examples of this dynamic came in mid-September when senior Brotherhood official Salah Soltan published a unilateral apology to the nation on behalf of the Brotherhood. Soltan’s US-citizen son Mohamed was shot in the Aug. 14 siege on a Brotherhood sit-in site and later arrested after two weeks on the run. Nevertheless, Salah Soltan wrote a month later that the Brotherhood should “apologize to the nation for our political mistakes…we are not against Egypt. We are part of Egypt.”
Among the mistakes he mentioned was a failure to better include the non-Islamist and revolutionary youth into their decision-making processes—spawning divisions and a national paranoia over the Islamist agenda that eventually turned much of the country against the Brotherhood.
But rather than becoming some sort of rallying point for the start of a push for reconciliation, Salah Soltan immediately became a man without a country. The Brotherhood distanced itself from his comments, saying Soltan did not speak for the organization. And, within days Soltan was arrested at Cairo airport by the very government with whom he was trying to reconcile.

Park Hill Loop/DFL

I walked the Park Hill Loop early this afternoon in 1:10:59. I jogged a little, for a total of about five minutes.

The DFL Green Bay Packers lead the Cavemen, 133.46-120.64. The only way the Packers will lose is if Tom DeCoud of the Atlanta Falcons intercepts three passes tonight, which would tie an NFL record. The NFL Packers beat the Detroit Lions, 22-9.

WILLIAMS JUNCTION—The latest woman I have met who falls into the category of women I would marry based on nothing but physical appearance and a thirty-seven and a half-second conversation, on the chance the marriage would work for thirty or more minutes, is Sarah Miller, 23, of Starkville, Miss. She was last year's winner of the Arkansas Traveller 100 women's division, and was in second place at approximately 48 miles in this year's Traveller when she and I talked at the Powerline aid station. I jogged and walked a total of about five miles during the afternoon and evening, two at Powerline, and three from the finish line, out and back on Arkansas 324.

Fort Roots Loop/First Tee

The Geezers walked the Fort Roots Loop this morning. Bill Brass and I jogged 1.5 miles en route. We completed six miles in 1:45:17, and the jog in 16:29. As a warmup for tonight's Cincinnati-Pittsburgh wildcard game (which we plan to watch at a Buffalo Wild Wings), Jeff Krupsaw and I played nine holes at First Tee this afternoon. I scored a 51, with 1 par, 2 bogies, 5 doubles, and 1 triple. I used 21 putts, the second most since I started keeping count. Last week it was because the greens were so fast. This week someone poured sand all over them.

Maple Street Loop/DFL

I walked the Maple Street Loop this morning, through tiny and sparse raindrops, in 29:36.

The DFL Green Bay Packers (4-0), without benefit of the NFL Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers*, beat the Dadburn Gallinappers (2-2), 136.47-91.22.

*we lost our Rodger-less game last season when we had to play Tim Tebow as his replacement

Sunday, September 29, 2013

Park Hill Loop/DFL

I walked the Park Hill Loop this morning in 1:19:20. It sprinkled a bit.

The NFL Green Bay Packers have a bye this weekend, which handicaps the DFL Packers. Instead of Aaron Rogers, we'll go with New York Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith. Still, we're fifteen-point favorites against the Dadburn Gallinappers. Denver Broncos tight end Julius Thomas will make his first start as a Packer.

A loss for the DFL Packers would require a miracle for the Dadburn Gallinappers comparable to the one that allowed Moses to somehow round off significant sins to ten. We lead 129.47-74.92. We have one player to go, and the Gallinappers two. Yahoo gives us a 100-percent chance of victory, which seems insane, considering the insanity of precisely ten commandments.

Levy Trail/First Tee/DFL

I walked two miles on the Levy Trail this morning in 32:06, and later golfed nine holes at First Tee with Rob Wistrand. I scored a 55, with 1 par, 3 bogies, 1 double, 2 triples, and 2 quadruples. I hit my woods and irons fairly well, but chipped poorly, and used 23 putts, the most since I started keeping count. I had two 3-putts, and three 4-putts. The greens were rocket fast, and in a couple cases as unfair as the greens were at that apartment complex in Sherwood. Rob's gotten pretty good in the three years since we last played. He scored a 45.

Oh, and one other thing. I bought a Filet O'Fish Meal at McDonalds before we played. Including tax, it cost $6.90.

The Green Bay Packers earned their third win in as many matchups when they destroyed Tuck Rule 4 Life 99.84 - 60.23. They got a lift from Jamaal Charles, who led the team with 25.51 points and Aaron Rodgers who had 23.80. The streak is the result of some high scoring by the Green Bay Packers, who own the second-highest overall point total in the league this season and are averaging 125.63 points per matchup. Green Bay Packers started two players with zero points while Tuck Rule 4 Life also served up two goose eggs, meaning both sides missed scoring opportunities. Tuck Rule 4 Life falls to 12th place with a 1-2 record. Green Bay stays unbeaten and in first place after having beaten The 546 Posse (144.65 - 114.21) and the Complete Sellouts (132.40 - 85.32).

Levy Trail/DFL

The weather remains lovely. I walked three miles on the Levy Trail early this afternoon in 44:47, and felt great. It helped me to recover from yesterday's disappointments. The NFL Green Bay Packers lost a heartbreaker to Cincinnati, 34-30. The DFL Packers will almost certainly win, though most of their players have underachieved. Fortunately, Tuck Rule 4 Life sucks dicks. We lead 87.14-48.22. I have Denver receiver Demaryius Thomas going in Monday Night Football. Tuck Rule has Pulaski Oak Grove graduate Darren McFadden, who plays for Oakland. Both of my franchises appear more vulnerable than I had thought, or hoped.

Too bad I'll have to spend the day inside, watching both of my Packers teams, and Ed Reed's return (with the Houston Texans, against Baltimore for Christ's sake). The DFL Packers are off to a nice start. Jamaal Charles scored 25.51 fantasy points for Kansas City on Thursday night, which I hope helps us crush Tuck Rule 4 Life.

I walked with the Geezers this morning. Bob McKinney and I took a slightly longer version of the Burns Park Loop; we went down to the Covered Bridge, so stretched the loop out to 5.8 miles, walked in 1:42:33. An hour later I played nine holes at First Tee with Jeff Krupsaw. I had an 11 on the par-5 eighth. Otherwise, I had 3 bogies, 4 doubles,  and 1 triple, for a 56. I think I used 19 putts. Man, it was hot out there, at least 94°F, but we had a great time. Lots of laughs, and lots of fantasy football talk. Jeff also has a good team. In fact, at its best, better than mine.

This was a story for the grandchildren, with the 47.08-point margin of victory being the third-highest recorded in the league this season. The Complete Sellouts were led by Calvin Johnson with 25.58 points and Terrelle Pryor who scored 14.30. The Packers started one player with zero points while Complete Sellouts also served up one goose egg, meaning each team left something on the table. The DFL Green Bay Packers are beating the tar out of the Complete Sellouts. It would take a parting-of-the-Red Sea sort of miracle for the Sellouts to win. The NFL Green Bay Packers beat the Washington Redskins, 38-20.

Covered Bridge Loop

I jogged and walked three laps (six miles) of the Covered Bridge Loop this morning in 1:14:04. I screwed up the splits, but did the last with Elaine Gimblet and Suzy Phillips in 23:52. It was under 60°F when I started, and 63 now at 8:57.

Levy Trail

I walked the Levy Trail through a dry, clear morning in 29:36. At least two dog-walkers and two bike-riders were out there with me. Before I walked, I road the Schwinn Delmar Cruiser over the Levy Loop in 10:36 (by the way, my two-mile run PR is in the 10:30s, set the summer of '82 on the late North Little Rock High track). You should google the bike. It's beautiful. I later made my first trip to Kroger on it. There's a basket on the handle bars big enough to hold two or maybe three plastic bags of groceries.
